Gulan is a charity registered in the UK for the promotion of Kurdish arts and culture. Gulan was established in 2008. It is managed by a board of trustees, Sarah Panizzo, David Carrington and Carla Garnelas. The inspiration for the formation of Gulan and the curator of its events is Della Murad.
Sarah's career has been as a commercial solicitor with a City firm, and with extensive cross border experience, particularly with Italy. She has non executive board experience of a range of companies, and as a charity trustee. In 2004 Sarah began working with Della as her mentor when Della won a Millenium Award. Since then she has continued to be involved in Kurdish cultural events and founded Gulan to assist in this work.
David has been an independent consultant since 2001, drawing on 25 years experience of senior management positions in charities, the last 13 as Chief Executive, and Board member experience with over a dozen organisations, including a University, the Media Trust, Alliance Publishing Trust and the National Foundation for Youth Music. He has also been a member of the Social Investment Task Force and Chair of the editorial group of the Philanthropy UK e-newsletter. He is a member of the Supervisory Board of Triodos Bank NV.
Carla has a background in charity work and Jewish education. Carla has a M.A. (hons) in Social Anthropology from Edinburgh and a M.A. in Race and Ethnic Relations from Birkbeck. She is senior policy and change officer at the Children's Rights Alliance for England.
Della was born in Halabja in the Kurdish region of Iraq. She works as an image consultant and fashion designer. She has organised many fashion shows with museums such as the V & A, The Museum of London and the Hackney Museum, and in other countries including the Netherlands, Germany, and Kurdistan. Her designs are improvisations on traditional Kurdish styles. She also promotes Kurdish food through her organisation, Della's Kitchen.
